The Iowa State Capitol has stood as a magnificent symbol of pride in our state for 115 years. The Capitol building continues to primarily serve as the center of the state government, while functioning as a museum for the many visitors it receives each year. Although the building was designed to meet current construction standards of the 1870s these fell short of the requirements and expectations for its role as a modern office building of today. The construction team was charged with introducing modern mechanical, electrical, and fire protection systems without disrupting the historical fabric of the building.
The construction work was required to occur around the calendar of the Iowa legislative sessions. This required a great deal of coordination between the construction team members. A brief scope for the project included renovation of the following systems:
-
Heating
-
Ventilation and Air Conditioning
-
Plumbing
-
Electrical
-
Communication
-
Lighting
-
Life Safety
-
Fire Detection and Suppression
This work above was concealed in the historical fabric of this 1884 building. Proctor Mechanical Corporation has brought valuable expertise to the construction team while successfully completing design solutions during the rehabilitation.
Sincerely,
Scott C. Allen, AIA
